Citizens' Bank
"flee Citizens Bank is the oldest in-
corporated bank in Crawford county,
and is recognized as one of the most
solid financial institutions in North-
western Arkansas. Since- the organ-
ization of this bank in May, 1886, to
meet the demands of the business in-
terests of Van Buren for adequate
banking capital, the success of the
Citizens Bank has been most phe-
nomenal, and during its existence of
some twelve years it has increased
its capital and surplus more than 50
per cent, and has never failed to pay
to its stockholders a semi-annual div-
idend of five per cent
Some idea of the volume of busi-
ness done by this bank can be funned
when it is known that it cashes an-
nually about $250,000 00 worth of
time checks for.the employees of the
Kansas and Arkansas Division of the
1.ltlissouri Pacific railway system, the
shops and general offices of which di -

vision are located here; and that
something over $200,000.00 is paid
out annually through this bank to the
shippers of small fruits, which sum is
insignificant as compared to its dis-
bursements for cotton, potatoes and
other products1.
While the natural advantages af-
forded by Van Buren for Banking,
as well as most every other character
of business, are most auspicious, yet
the wonderful growth and prosperity
of the Gtizcns Bank is attributable
IA gely to the Lberal yet conserva-
tive manner that has characterized its

Shibley, Geo. It. Wood, William Bow-
lin, F. G. Kerr, F. 1?'. Cooper and J.
If. Greig ; all of whom are closely
identified with the business interests
of the city and among whom are to
be found her most aggressive and
public spirited citizens. The presi-
dent, Judge 13. J. Brown, is one of the
wealthiest men of the state ; a man
of wide business ' experience, and
closely allied with the banking busi-
ness of Arkansas. He was one of
the prime movers in the organization
of the Arkansas Balikers Association,
of which association he only recently
retired from the presidency.
A fair idea of the characterof men
composing the stockholders of the
Citizens Bank can be gathered, when
it is considered that their combined
wealth exceeds a million dollars.
