HISTORIC DISTRICT COMMISSION MINUTES
August 12, 2021
The Van Buren Historic District Commission held its monthly meetuig on Thursday, August 12, 2021, at 5:30 p.rn. in the City
Council Room of the Municipal Complex. Cormiussioners present: Chairman Vickie Davis, Vice Chairman Derald Porter, Paul
Gibson, Cathy Gifford, and Lindsay Dodson. Commissioner Steve Edwards was absent. Others in attendance: Historic District
Cotnttrission Secretary Jennifer Willoughby and James Minish of Iron FIorse Records, 610 Maiu Street.
Chairman Vickie Davis called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m., the first item on the agenda was to approve the minutes From
the February 11, 2021, meeting. A motion was made by Commissioner Derald Porter and seconded by Commissioner Paul
Gibson to approve the minutes. `I1te motion was approved unanimously.
First on the agenda was a Certificate of Appropriateness submitted by James Minish of Iron Horse Records at 610 Magi Street,
fox a front business sign. A motion was made by Commissioner Paul Gibson and seconded by Commissioner Cathy Gifford
that nothntg in the proposed design affects adjacent downtown buildings. The approved paint colors were Andover Cream
trimmed with flat black or flat brown paint The approved font is to be the Broker font on a 4' wide by 2' high painted sign
above the door. A motion was made by Commissioner Cathy Gifford and seconded by Commissioner Derald Porter fox
approval of the sign at 610 Main Street. The motion was approved unauimousl}�.
Next was to discuss any New/Old Business. Chairman Vickie Davis gave an update on the Fairview Cemetery after the May 3,
2021, tornado. In July, there was a brief meet -up with Randy Smith at the cemetery to assess damages. Mr. Smith has agreed
to apply For a giant to repair a gravestone in the Wallace -Ward Family Plot, the same gravestone he had previously received
grant money fox in 2007. Mr. Smith also mentioned getting with the Mayor to check into possible bonds or funds from the
Friends of Fairview account that could be used to replace other markers and possibly fix the iron fence.
Commissioner Lutdsay Dodson had questions about the Van Buren Downtown Streetscape Project that is currently still being
worked on by engineers but would be used to improve sidewalles and add landscaping and new irrigation and electrical to make
downtown more walkable. Commissioner Dodson would like the City to give the Historic District Commission updates and
information on the project. Commissioner Dodson also brought up concerns about downtown business owners not complying
with the Historic District Guidelines and haw to enforce the guidelines. Chairman Vickie Davis mentioned the Commission
taking a walls -through downtown to survey what businesses are non -compliant and then sending letters to the non -compliant
businesses.
