HISTORIC DISTRICT COMMISSION MINUTES
February 13, 2014
The Van Buren Historic District Commission held its monthly meeting on Thursday, February 13,
2014 at 5:30 P.M., in the City Council Room of the Municipal Complex.
Members Present – Jody Rhodes, John Symonds and Paul Gibson
Member Absent – Vickie Davis
Items on the Agenda:
1. Approval of minutes from the last meeting on November 14, 2013
2. Introduce Planning Assistant Lisa Franklin
3. COA for outside signage and logo on new business Once Mine, Now Yours Resale Shop,
represented by Brant and Morgan Roberts
4. Any other business that comes before this commission
Acting Chairman, Jody Rhodes called the meeting to order at 5:30 P.M. The first action by the
commission was to approve the minutes from the last meeting. A motion was made by John
Symonds and was seconded by Paul Gibson to approve the minutes. The motion was approved
unanimously.
Planning Director Joseph Hurst introduced the new Planning Assistant, Lisa Franklin.
Acting chairman, Jody Rhodes announces that we have a COA before the commission this
evening for a sign and logo approval for a new business, Once Mine, Now Yours Resale Shop.
The business owner’s, Brant and Morgan Roberts, present the drawing on the proposed sign and
discuss the paint colors and that they are in compliance with a flat paint, approved color and font.
They state that PAC is designing the sign.
John Symonds says he is in agreement to accept this COA for approval and states the work is not
affecting any adjacent properties. Mr. Symonds motions to accept this COA for the sign and
logo. Paul Gibson seconds the motion and it is approved unanimously.
The next item for discussion was the AHPP-Historic Preservation Restoration and County
Courthouse Restoration Grant Programs and the deadline coming up on March 7, 2014. The
commissioners state that Randy Smith is the person to contact and has a wealth of information on
this. They believe the money is being used for the restoration of headstones in Fairview
Cemetery.
Joseph Hurst also states we have a meeting with Patricia Blick on Friday, February 21, 2014
regarding grants.
Other business discussed was the mention of Derald Porter as a possible candidate to fill the
empty commissioner’s seat.
This concluded the discussions and with no further business, Jody Rhodes motions to adjourn.
John Symonds seconds the motion. Motion approved to adjourn.
