HISTORIC DISTRICT COMMISSION MINUTES
August 10, 2023
1. Call to Order/Roll Call. The Van Buren Historic District Commission held its monthly meeting on Tlmrsday, August
105 2023, at 5:30 p.m. in the Planning Department Conference Room at the Municipal Complex. Commission members present:
Chairman Vickie Davis, Vice -Chairman Derald Porter, Lindsay Dodson, Paul Gibson, Cathy Gifford, Andy Knox, and
Commission Secretary Jennifer Willoughby. In attendance to represent for COA: John Horne of Da'Bayou Snowballs & Sweets
at 518 Main Street.
2. Approval of Minutes from July 13, 2023. A motion was made by Commissioner Cathy Gifford and seconded by
Commissioner Derald Porter to approve the minutes. The motion was approved unanimously.
3. COA #5-2023-518 Main—Da'Bayou Snowballs &Sweets/John Horne; Mr. Horne submitted a COA for both
a metal 48x48 sign to be attached to the front brick facade and for sign lettering to be placed on the glass front door. The paint
colors for the designs were chosen from the Historic Colors of America chart. The colors being used for the sign designs are
Flat Black, Concord Grape, Lady Banksia, Veranda Blue, and Jewett White; the font used will be Black Castle, Decor, Album
Script, and Times New Roman. A motion was made by Commissioner Lindsay Dodson and seconded by Commissioner Cathy
Gifford that nothing in the proposed design significantly affects the adjacent downtown buildings. A motion to approve the
sign design was made by Commissioner Paul Gibson and seconded by Commissioner Andy Knox. Both motions were approved
unanimously.
4. Old/New Business —Held a brief discussion about the contract the City now has with The Lakota Group to update
the Historic District Design Guidelines using CLG Grant money. Commissioner Paul Gibson also discussed the progress being
made by The Rotary Club and other volunteers to repair and update the bathrooms in Blanche Moore Park.
5. Adjourn. A motion to adjourn was made by Commissioner Paul Gibson and seconded by Commissioner Cathy
Gifford. The motion was approved unanimously.
