ORDINANCE NO. 1,0 -2008
BE IT ENACTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL, FOR THE CITY OF VAN BUREN,
ARKANSAS AN ORDINANCE TO BE ENTITLED:
AN ORDINANCE TO RATIFY AND AMEND THE CIVIL
SERVICE REGULATIONS FOR THE POLICE AND FIRE
DEPARTMENTS OF THE CITY OF VAN BUREN,
ARKANSAS, AS ADOPTED JULY 8,1993, AS AMENDED, TO
CLARIFY THE REQUIREMENTS FOR TAKING THE CIVIL
SERVICE EXAM, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
WHEREAS, the City adopted the Civil Service Regulations for the Police and Fire Departments
of the City of Van Buren, as amended, pursuant to A.C.A. 14 -51 -101 et. seq.; and
WHEREAS, it has been determined by the City Council that there is a need to clarify and revise
the requirement for taking the civil service exam; and
WHEREAS, these amendments have been recommended by a majority of the Civil Service
Commission.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED AND ENACTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF VAN BUREN, ARKANSAS, THAT:
SECTION 1: The Civil Service Regulations for the Police and Fire Departments of the City of Van
Buren, Arkansas, adopted July 8, 1993, as amended, (as referenced by Van Buren
Municipal Code Chapter 2.40) shall be amended as follows:
The following provisions shall be added to ARTICLE II SECTION 1 which shall
now read as follows:
All examinations given for appointment or promotion for the police
and fire departments shall be open competitive examination to test the
relative fitness of applicants for the positions. The Commission shall.
subject to its own rules. determine the qualifications for admission to
any test. Admission to the tests shall be open only to persons who
appear to possess the required qualifications and may be lawfully
appointed to a position in the class for which a list is to be
established_
SECTION 2: The Civil Service Regulations for the Police and Fire Departments of the City of Van
Buren. Arkansas, adopted July 8, 1993, as amended, is hereby ratified and adopted
hereto.

SECTION 3: The various provisions and parts of this Ordinance are hereby declared to be
severable, and, if any section or part of a section, or any provision or part of a
provision herein, is declared to be unconstitutional, inappropriate, or invalid by any
court of competent jurisdiction, such holding shall not invalidate or affect the
remainder of this Ordinance and to that extent the provisions hereto are declared to
be severable.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, the City of Van Buren, Arkansas, by its City Council, did pass,
approve, and adopt, by a vote of Ii for and 0 against, the foregoing Ordinance at its meeting
held on the 24th day of March, 2008.
